We see here that in the Buddhist context, it is “intellectual views and theoretical understanding” that the tenth precept must be addressing. But like Buber, Dogen is more specific than that. It is what he calls “the conceptual Buddha”—or Dharma or Sangha—that is the problem. Here is a perhaps more typical Zen expression of this point:

Even the mere mention of the word “Buddha” should make a man rinse his mouth for three days. If one is such a man, when he hears someone say, “The very mind is Buddha,” he will cover his ears and run away.[3]
